Psychotherapist professional development

A number of therapists tend to become integrative already in the early stages of their professional development. Our initial interest in exploring why and how this happens has gradually led us to coin the term "personal therapeutic approach," which reflects the fact that psychotherapists tend to gradually develop a distinctive working style during their development, which may combine elements of different therapeutic orientations. In a series of qualitative studies we have attempted to explore and describe the general patterns of the process of forming a personal therapeutic approach. Some of our studies focus on the retrospective view of experienced therapists on their professional and personal development. Others examine whether and how this 'personalisation' is already manifested in novice therapists and what implications this has for therapist training and education. In collaboration with Len Jennings, we have also explored the development of expertise in psychotherapy. Furthermore, we focused on psychotherapy training and here we, for instance, we developed a competency model of training in psychothearpy integration. This research was supported by Czech Science Foundation (Projekt no. GAP407/11/0141).
